I've discussed this here before, but there is fresh material to present. I've already posted about it at the monster HM thread over at Micechat, but it truly belongs here.
Everyone knows the HM opened Saturday, August 9, 1969, right? That's what DB.com says, Jason Surrell's book says, official Disney literature says; in short, it's what just about everybody says. Only problem is, it's wrong.
The Haunted Mansion opened to the public on Tuesday, August 12.
1) Here are clippings from the two largest papers in LA (at the time), from Aug 12:

Notice the opening line and the photo caption on the LA Times story. Notice the remark about the ghosts moving in at midnight in the Herald-Examiner story. These papers plainly announced the public opening of the HM on that day, the 12th.
2) The sneak preview for the press was the day before, Aug 11:

3) Look at this rotating sidebar item from here on DB.com:
4) The "soft opening" for DL employees was Aug 7 and 8, from 7pm to midnight. Does it make sense to have a "soft opening," which is something they use to catch last minute problems, only hours before the official grand opening?

Quote:The Tate murders took place early in the morning of Aug 9.
"Came across your site recently - I think it's excellent! We were visiting LA in '69 and talked our parents into staying an extra day for the grand opening of the Mansion. It wasn't easy, as our mom was absolutely freaked out by the Tate murders that had occurred just a day or so earlier. Just a bit of trivia for you..." - Jeff Hines, Elk Grove, IL
