That's an interesting twist in the tale. The thing is, people have seen a man in the spider web. It's very possible that it was only there for a very short time (Much like 'ol Hatty was), and removed and stashed in the basement. Most of the stories do say that he wound up under the ride track, and was there for a long time (until he vanished; could he have been re-dressed for another attraction? Or possibly just destroyed?).

It's not all that implausible that he was there while leaving very little documentation; it was such a dark section of the ride that photos would be nearly impossible to take without a flash (and even then, they'd probably come out far too dark, or overly bright). It wasn't a major piece of scenery, and few people would probably notice its absence right away. You would think that somebody would have come across some concept artwork, or WDI photos or something, but then, they're probably tucked very deeply away in the archives. It wouldn't have been something to get a lot of press (not a major set piece), so it wouldn't have shown up in ads or pre-opening material, and because it was removed, they probably didn't need any of the artwork or photos, and filed them away. Is it possible that stuff could have been destroyed? I know they do get rid of some things, mostly models. Not sure what the policy on hand-drawn artwork is.

Anyway, it's very possible that he could've been there. We've just seen less about him, and know less about him, because he wasn't featured in promotions or pre-opening material or anything as Hatbox Ghost was. Hatty couldn't just fade into history, because he was very firmly placed into Mansion mythology early on, featuring in the LP's, books, etc. A man in a spiderweb, which would probably be considered mere set dressing instead of a character, would slip into obscurity very quickly. I'm just waiting for the day that somebody finally comes across a blurry, overexposed shot of him in a dusty family vacation album from the 70's...
