Spaceship Earth - reopens for sneak previews |
Lead | |

Just caught this on the morning's news. Spaceship Earth started sneak previews at around 8pm last night. Guest reviews so far have been positive. The new narration for the attraction is read by none other than Dame Judy Dench.

I rode the revamped Spaceship Earth, and it was very good. I particularly like the choices you make and the show on your screen at the end of the ride.

Choices you make? Show at the end??
Did they merge Spaceship earth with my favorite lost ride, Horizons?

They basically updated the "backwards" portion of the attraction to encompass interactivity between the guest and their vehicle. There's a screen in front of each set of seats. At the beginning of the ride, it tells you your journey through time will conclude with you being able to see what your future would be with technology (far fetched version, but fun). While I've had a few friends note they didn't like it, I thought it was alright (loved the "blue dots" area - wicked cool).
I like the ride, and I like Judy Dench, but I really miss the Jeremy Irons narration. His was more of a dramatic dialog on time's great achievements with communication (paired with a wonderful soundtrack). Judy's is (mho) a little more along the lines of a polite and cheerful teacher, filling you in on the milestones in communication and technology. |

Is there an chance to take over the World?
"Let's go Pinky..." "Where to Brain? Snarf!" "To Epcot, and to take over the World!" "Oh boy! We're going to Disney! Snarf! Do you suppose we can stay with Mickey and Minny?" |

Oh man, I loved Horizons. Thinking about it makes me sad... all people want nowadays are thrill rides... *sniff*

Interesting, thanks for the heads up...at least they didnt make it into a roller coaster...(I thought there were some thoughts on making it a coaster)...anyways Im glad it stays similair to the original.
My list of things to do now is growing... I havent seen the re-vamped HM, Spaceship Earth, or Soarin yet... |

I personally liked the new Spaceship Earth. I did miss the old narration, but I don't have any complaints about the new one.

killuridol - Yep, I too heard at one point they had designs on making Spaceship Earth more of a thrill ride. If not a coaster, then some sort of experience in which you thought you were going fast (visually).
I found a link with a brief blurb a third of the way down on what the attraction could have been changed to (Time Racers). Rumor was that WDI decided not to go forth with the plans because it might affect the structural integrity of the building. Additional link |

The revamp takes away from the attraction | ||
|
I saw Spaceship Earth during a soft opening. The refurb took away from the experience for me personally because it removed some of the dark ride spookiness I
enjoyed. Here's what I noticed:
-- Intensely disliked the new narration; it was too friendly and cheerful. The old narration was more pensive and spooky. -- Hated the video screen addition when you're going backwards, getting ready to exit the attraction. It adds light to the attraction and detracted from the dark ride ambience -- It seemed to me that they sped-up the motion of the animatronics considerably; again, taking away from the drama and spookiness. I don't recall if the ride vehicle was moving faster--that may explain the speeding up of the animatronics--or not. But this saddened me. Unlike the Haunted Mansion refurb (got my approval), the Spaceship Earth refurb is a two thumbs down for me personally. It won't stop me from riding Spaceship Earth, but I'll enjoy it less for sure. Has anyone else noticed the sped-up animatronics? Maybe they were just experimenting during the soft opening. I haven't ridden it since the soft opening.
Speeding up the motion of the animatronics certainly detracts from the spooky ambiance, as do the new, more friendly sounding narration and weird kid's TV
game on the ride down.
