I can't remember if this has ever been brought up before, but I came across that cassette tape version of the "The Story and Song of the Haunted
Mansion" LP I'd stored away and after re-listening to it realized during the graveyard segment something I'd forgotten about soundtrack-wise until
now. During the lyrics ''Grim Grinning Ghosts come out to socialize..." being sung by Thurl and company each time you can also hear this chorus
of voices basically wailing along with this drawn-out moaning sound. I wonder if this track ever made it onto the ride during its initial opening in 1969 or
was it just something created for the LP? For that matter there are also several moans, cackles, etc. heard on that LP during the description of the goings-on
in the graveyard (as well as heard during the "Showtime Disneyland" HM episode with the Osmonds) - were these ever actually heard in the DL HM at one
time?

I think that all of this additional stuff was made especially for the LP, as there is alot of EXTRA narration from the Ghost Host that I wish Paul Frees would
have recorded. I have the studio recording tracks on all of the graveyard items, and I can say that some of the original stuff is used on the LP, but some of
those tracks were obviously added for the record only.

There are some tracks (notably the "dum-deedee-dum" singer) that were probably never used in the actual attraction, and others that haven't been used for a long time. Most people don't know this, but the pop-up ghosts were originally choreographed to serve as sort of visual exclamation points for the GGG song. To this day, at DL and WDW (but not Tokyo), they're timed to pop up during the final line of each verse (i.e., during "ggg come out to socialiiiiiiiiiiize"), and they used to have special lighting to highlight them as they popped up. They also used to have a wide variety of shrieks, yells, groans, etc. to accompany their pops. You can still hear this on that album. Pay attention after the singing busts are done and Thurl starts narrating and you'll notice that the weird screams, etc., occur during that part of the song. Incidentally, that may be why the other name for GGG is "The Screaming Song." |

I also think the used HM SFX in different places. Fore example, When Ron tries to open the porch door. It certainly sounds like the COD rattles. I also here
COD moans in other parts.

I can certainly attest to those graveyard pop-up sounds being heard in the WDW graveyard - at least in the early '70's when I brought along my trusty
mini-tape recorder to record each ride-thru. However, the tracks heard there seemed to mostly be ones from the COD (i.e. the drawn-out woman's scream and
male cackle) and not anything like the ones I'd come to know from the LP and Osmonds special. (Although there *were* shrieks like the one on the LP
eminating from the bicycle-riders.) Hence my wondering if at least the original DL version featured those LP sound effects early on...

during a "lights-on" tour of the Mansion, our guide pointed out that on the gravestones behind which each of the popups "hide," there is a
small built-in speaker in the lower center. If you look close enough during the ride, you can see these speakers (they're a slightly different color than
the rest of the tombstone). silent now, but they were once the source of the terrifying screams that accompanied the pop-ups.

I'm sorry to disagree, but I just listened to the WHOLE thing last night, I have it on CD, and I can hear stuff in that production that isn't anywhere
in the DL HM or WDW HM!! On top of the doors opening and slamming shut, the endless hallway sounds are TOTALLY different, almost the same sound, but it sounds
like a different take, much longer than the ride, and I hear background singers in the graveyard that aren't anywhere on any of the studio recording tracks
that I have. Aside from the different narration, and Ron Howard and the girl, there really seems to be alot of stuff that they had added just for this
production. But, the bottom line is, this is just my opinion!

Yes, Dan, I read your post, and I went thru ALL of the studio graveyard recordings. The "Cue" numbers all match up, and that particular recording is
NOT in that bunch. Unless they recorded some "inserts" for later use, and then decided to throw them all onto the record, I really do not know.

"The Story and Song from the Haunted Mansion" was a quick, cheap production. It was regarded as a "children's storytelling record," not
a big deal and not worth sinking a lot of time or money into. There are several examples in it of slipshod production and editing (sound of pages being turned,
clumsy switches from stereo to mono, overlong pauses). There is no way that someone said, "Hey, these graveyard tracks are great, but let's go hire
some singers and record additional tracks and add them to the mix, and let's record some new sound effects and deftly mix them in too." All for what?
To beef up the background tracks for Thurl's narration during the graveyard sequence?
Here's what I think. For the Ghost Host narration, John Wood (the scriptwriter) just used some old script that he got from X or somebody, a script that was already obsolete at the time they were making the album, and they probably knew it was obsolete, but hey, good enough for a kid's record. They got Pete, Thurl, Ron, and Robie, and whoever did the raven, into the studio to record the vocal tracks, not even at the same time, just whenever they could get them. For all of the rest, they used sound effects from the Disney audio library plus actual tracks recorded for the attraction. Many of these tracks, including the graveyard musical tracks, were recorded less than a month earlier. Mix all this together and boom, there's your record. I stand by my opinion that nothing you hear in the graveyard sequence was created for the album. Under the circumstances, it would have been considered a ridiculous waste of time and money. Whatever you hear there that isn't on available bootleg files is something that was overlooked by whoever packaged those files, or it has been misplaced, or it got destroyed. |

The moaning sound was used in the attraction atleast during the early 1990's. This 1994 video of the Disneyland Mansion shows that from 2:47 to 3:16, they
could easily be heard.

The underlying track beneath the Singing Busts was a proposed track for the wind. It was going to match up with underscore, almost as though the wind was
singing along with the rest of the graveyard. I believe they talk about it in the Persistance of Vision article.
