On the other hand...I kind of liked the "melancholy, tragic lost love" feeling that the old Bride brought to the Mansion. It was very understated, but very different, and seemed more like a classic ghost story.
So I wonder...is there a way that they could have had the same special effects, yet kept the "tragic lost love" vibe?
Among the concept art is a Marc Davis changing portrait, never used. The "before" depicts a lovely, if sad-faced, bride in a Victorian gown. The "after" depicts a skeletal figure, her gown in tatters and covered with cobwebs.
So...maybe they could have used the same special effects that created Constance to create a beautiful, sorrowful young woman with a glowing, beating heart, calling out for her lost groom...who morphs into a skeleton, her bridal gown ragged, but her heart still beating.
What do you think? (Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with Constance...I just wonder if this might have been better.)
