So I was chatting with my folks the other day during a family dinner and the topic of our two family vacations to WDW in 1976 and 1978 came up. I was only 10 and 12 respectively, so my memories of the minutiae of the trips are very fragmented. “Didn’t we take some Super 8 movies on the ’76 trip?” I asked.
“You bet,” said my dad.
“Anything in the Haunted Mansion?" I asked as casually as I could.
“Tons,” said my dad. “A whole roll of film inside and half a roll outside.”
“Yep. I love that ride. Too bad nothing I took inside came out,” he said. “That’s why I bought the movie at the gift shop.”
“Um, dad… whatever happened to that movie?”
“Oh, I cut it into our home movies. Why?”
Further discussion revealed that he knew he placed the film in one piece between his shots of the externals of the mansion and the entrance queue, and shots he took after exiting, but he couldn’t remember what (if any) of the original Disney film was removed and lost/thrown away. We were at a restaurant and I won’t be able to get back home until next weekend. I can’t wait to dig out those films and see what remains.
On a different theme but still thinking of those home movies, I remembered (and the folks “confirmed”) that 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea was closed for a refurb during one visit, most likely in ’76. Dad swears he got up on some surrounding rocks so he could put the camera over the wall and he took some movies of the drained outside part of the ride, plus mom said she thinks the Skyway went over it and we took pics from there, too.
Anyone remember for sure a) did Skyway go over the “lagoon” for 20,000 Leagues and b) if 20,000 Leagues was closed in either ’76 or ’78 during March or April (both visits corresponded with spring break from school)?
