Anyone available to buy some of these limited edition sets for me that are going on sale next week? I will pay a fee for the service, but not anything crazy
like the eBay prices. If anyone is feeling benevolent, please e-mail me at moobooks@ix.netcom.com
Thanks. |

Those pins are nice. Thank you for the link, D D. I have not looked at that site for awhile now.

At www.odpt.com they have now posted a complete catalog of the Summer O-Pin House pins...by my tally counting pins in box
sets, frame sets etc..I counted up 148 different new Haunted Mansion pins...yikes...

Those images have been up for a month at least.
In my opinion most of it is crap: cartoonish artwork that doesn't resemble the original artwork or characters in the Mansion. The only decent box set is the door, which contains pins that are all original art or images. Out of all the other pins there are only half a dozen that appeal to me. It's a shame the folks in the design group (like the folks at WDCC) have so little respect for the original art that means so much to fans of the Mansion. If collectors gave this whole lot a resounding raspberry, perhaps they would get the point. But I have little hope for that. Pin addicts have no self control and in their mania (including the eBay lot) they will buy all of these therebye guaranteeing that we will be subject to more of the same trash in the future. |

Hmmm. I really do empathize with your view, Genii, but I actually like some of the artwork, etc, that they are using. If they had more prints I would be happy
to get some of them, but I really don't think the issue is the pins. If Disney kept with the same original art, all the collectables would become old hat
(no pun intended for the HBG). For example, take all of the different renditions of the stretching portraits... how many times are they going to drive them
into the ground? I was relieved when I saw the WDI take on them with the Disney Characters... putting in Tic Toc as the aligator under Minnie was pretty smart.
If I weren't suprised by the new things, I wouldn't be interested in them. And they reflect the cultural art of today, just as the art styles were different in the 60s and 70s. |

I'm actually not referring to things like the WDI stretching pins with Disney characters--I think we've all (mostly all) come to accept those types of
things now. Imposing existing cartoon characters into settings from Disney attractions is "okay." What I dislike are dopey child-like cartoon
versions of existing iconic figures that are not cartoon characters.
Your point regarding not driving the same images into the ground on collectibles is well taken, however in this case it's misplaced. Of course, none of us needs (and perhaps few want) yet another iteration of the stretching portraits in any form. Why Disney keeps making yet new versions of these is a mystery. There are HUNDREDS of pieces of concept art, and many figures and scenes in the Mansion, that have NEVER been reproduced as collectibles using original art or art that is faithful to the look and style of the existing figures and scenes. Let me give you an idea of some things that I would buy in a second: a resin figurine of the singing busts that is an accurate reproduction of what's in the Mansion, not some cartoonish pin; a resin figurine of Madame Leota's globe with a sound chip in it. I'm sure you get the picture. |

I agree with Genii completely....I am not a pin collector, but all I see lately are tacky cartoonish cheap loooking pins. They look like something taken out of
a children's coloring book. Of course, most pin colectors are so obsessed, they will buy any and all crap put out by Disney...so why should Disney even
bother making quality collectibles that require talent, artistry and imagination..when they can just put out cheap pins and make $$$$$$

I don't mind most of the pins, but the set that gets the "Worst Pin Idea of the Year" award goes to the bobble head pins! I laughed myself silly
looking at those! I don't mind owning the bobble head figures themselves even though they're a bit too cartoonish for me, but to make pins out of them?

Yeah, it is kind of dopey.

The Genii wrote: I'm not a collector, but I have to say I agree with the thrust of these remarks. There are so many things Disney could do that would certainly be well-received (and make them $$$), but instead they just keep recycling the hitchhikers and coming up with weird things like pins reproducing old newspaper ads for the HM. There is a failure of imagination, or a disconnect with the fanbase, that is hard to explain. Where is the poster-sized, fine art print of Madame Leota's spell book? How about a working, functioning doorknob set modeled after the CoD snakes? Or the mace door knockers; why not sell actual door knockers in that style? Can you imagine any HM fan that wouldn't put one of those on a door in their house somewhere? I'm just sitting here, and I can think of half a dozen things like that off the top of my head that (IMHO) could hardly miss. Speaking of Madame Leota's spellbook, how many of you have noticed that the book-of-spells pin features an additional, never-before-seen page from Mdm L's book? Now there's a good idea. |

I agree with you Dan! They need to put some true fans on the merchandise design committee. These are items I would purchase in a bride's heartbeat: A full
size stretch room gargoyle (hopefully from the original molds), a recreation of a Madame Leota ball that would speak, a corridor of doors doorway at least a
foot tall, with a door frame and at least a few inches of creepy wallpaper on either side and it would have a sound chip with ghost sounds activated with a
hidden button, but not cost the amount of a home mortgage!

There used to be a committee for merchandising that included volunteer members of the public. They disbanded it.

Heh... too true Karl.
Disney has had a long history of changing non-cartoon characters into a cartoon version... Take a look on the DB.com homepage and look at the illustration next to the "foolish mortals are talking" area and then look at the Magic from the Haunted Mansion book. The illustrations are very cartoon-like, but we have seen those images that they are now "classic illustration" Not everyone is going to like the new artwork, but several people will. PS. Yes, the bobble head pins are about the worst I've seen.... shudder. |

I think the person who designed them should be turned into ... a human bobblehead.

I like pins, however, have never ever liked those idiotic bobble heads. Why is it that some humans find those to be amusing?
I agree with many of the sentiments shared by previous posts. Good ideas Dan! |
