On the one hand........backstories? No backstories. HM don't need no steeeeeenking backstories. Boo hiss. Remember, the abbreviation for "backstory" is BS.

On the other hand, what you're looking at has to make enough sense so that you can suspend disbelief and enjoy the show. You need a reasonable degree of internal logic. It has to hang together.

Constance and most of her husbands are not from New Orleans but from California (WDI has furnished this info in the wedding certificate props in the attic at WDW). She married a succession of husbands and killed each one on their wedding night, for the money. The names and year-dates are all supplied right there on the frames of the attic portraits. Probably the last husband was the owner of the HM, located in New Orleans. Based on the evident age of the house (late 18th, early 19th c.) and the date of her last known marriage (George, 1877), she has no connection to the house's original builder or owner(s). After her last murder, she lived to a ripe old age and died (stretchroom portrait). Some people try to make a big deal out of the fact that the widow is sitting on what looks like a fresh grave, so George must have died recently, etc. Bah. This misunderstands the conventions of portraiture, which condense significant events from a person's life into one scene. Anyway, Connie was probably the last human owner. How do we know? Because all of her stuff is still in the attic. After she died, they would have put all her stuff up there pending pick-up by the nearest of kin, so that the house could be put back on the market, but for some reason it never got sold. It probably became a haunted house at that time.

Why does Connie appear as a young bride instead of an old widow? Lots of fanciful theories are bandied about, but if you stick to conventional ghost lore, the answer is simple. Haunting is caused by unfinished business in life. Something unresolved. A body remains unburied, hidden in a wall. Or a murder remains undetected and unavenged. Or some task was interrupted that simply must be completed before the spirit can move on. That sort of thing. The ghost appears as the person did in life at the time of the unfinished business, whatever and whenever that was. Since most of the time the "unfinished business" is something occurring right at the point of death (an unavenged murder, an improperly buried corpse, etc.), it is a common mistake to think that spirits always look like the person did when they died. In Connie's case, the "unfinished business" is obviously the five (at least) murders she got away with, all in her youth and always on a wedding night. The husbands' wedding portraits are like bony fingers pointing to her, accusing her from beyond the grave. They cannot rest until Connie's crimes are uncovered and acknowledged. She cannot find rest, or "move on," until they do. But she's truly insane (in death as in life) and so she's unrepentant and acts like she has no idea why she's stuck in her old house.

That's my take, anyway. If you stick to the items WDI has actually put into the presentation, and if you try to explain it all by sticking to traditional beliefs about ghosts, it all makes sense.
