40th Chess Set |

Did anyone else get a chess set? Just opened mine and the wings are broken of the Queen's helmet. Set number 10/40.

I got mine (11/40) and my playing pieces are all fine, but one of the planters on the playing board is broken off. But it doesn't matter because I'm
returning it. After closer inspection, I don't think it's worth $2,000. Not even close.
If I had more time to think about it in California, I probably wouldn't have bought it... but it was all so hectic that I deferred my decision until now. |

Anybody see these at DLR or anywhere else? I'd be amazed if they sold out the edition before or after the event.

I went ahead and returned it at the event. I saw it the first evening at the merchandise store. I took many pictures and asked to handle the caretaker and
rooks and decided against it the second day when I picked up my stuff. The bishops were not translucent as it appeared on the web site. The remaining paint job
looked rushed and drab. The rooks paint job was poor too. It is a shame that the artist took so long in creating this set. Perhaps he needed a little more
time. The only plus was the knights and the box it came in. Even if it were discounted or a larger edition I would not get or keep it for too long.

The entire thing would have worked better if the pieces were solid bronze and the set half the price...otherwise, it's ridiculous

I have a twofold problem, it's price and lack of space!

Sorry to hear about the broken pieces. I feel your pain.
You know...I walked away from the event in September feeling underwhelmed, but still glad I went. The aftermath, however, has left quite the bad taste in my mouth. |

Received our chess set today unbroken, however several of the pieces were out of place and not in their holders. They really don't fit snug in the slots
like I would expect - the holder looks like it is meant to hold regular chess pieces not these custom ones. Plus there is an empty slot which makes no sense at
all like it's missing a piece but yet all 16 pieces are there. I am also surprised that no where on the chess set is it numbered - only the piece of paper
that your had to tear in order to get into the box.
The pieces do not glow in the dark at all like the pictures the artist showed and it's not the bright colors as the one that was on display in the event store. On our base, they missed painting a row of railing on the board and one of the fence pieces is bent, but not broken. When we saw it at the event store and talked to the artist we were pleased with it but with the poor paint job and other problems it's not worth the $2K and we also are going to be returning our set. The concept is great, and the artist was enthusiastic about the piece - and had a good explanation for why he chose each character. There just isn't the level of detail in the finished product as there should be. For a $500 chess set, this would be barely acceptable. With the raised price comes raised expectations and they simply failed to hit that mark. |

I was interested at the original price of $999. When they jacked it up to $2000 I said forget it. It doesn't sound like it's even worth the $999.

I said the same thing when I received it yesterday... $500 would be the most I'd pay for it and even that's pushing it. I'd much rather have my
$2,000 back than keep this set.
I think the two singing busts are nice and I'd love to keep just those two pieces, as there haven't really been any accurate-looking busts ever released. But the board itself is nothing special and as stated above, much of the painting on the pieces is not anything special. Looks no different than the usual mass-produced stuff. |

I had it on my list and cancelled it when I was able to examine the pieces, etc. I was really looking forward to it but, sadly, it totally underwhelmed me when
I finally saw it. Not worth $2K, and I agree that it's barely worth $500. A totally opposite example was the Terri Hardin Disneyland puzzle she created for
the last Disneyana held at Disneyland. I was a bit concerned to pay $1800 (even if it had a LE of 10). But, when I got it I was very happy I did, especially
when it included a scene of the hitchhiking ghosts on it. Still never have seen it up for auction anywhere.

Here is a photo of the item he speaks of. It is the 4th photo from the top.

It's always a shame when the item fails to match the price they set for it. I'm sure the person who feels the worst is the artist, who probably dreamed
of something like this for quite a while until it was actually produced.
Generally, most of the mass-produced limited edition pieces (as opposed to the one-of-a-kinds or the very limited editions handmade by the artists themselves) seemed to be of poorer quality this time. The exceptions in my opinion are the walking stick, the two items by Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily, the Gallery of Light HHGhosts, and the WDCC Organist. Note that the latter two are made by different entities. I wasn't blown away by the final quality of the pocketwatch "housing," block puzzle frame, Grandfather clock, bookends--all the stuff made of resin and painted is of medium quality--all the items that were delivered late. When you put them in the showcase next to the items from past events, it's pretty clear that the work was done at a lesser quality factory in China. Disney needs to hear our voices on this issue or we'll get shabby merchandise again in the next event. I imagine getting stuck with all those chess sets will set them thinking. |

So when I was on the phone today ordering the HM cel from Delivears I told them I would like to return the chess set due to the damage of the fence and it not
being painted. I was expecting them to issue a call tag for it either through UPS or Fedex but they told me to pay for the return shipping and then they would
reimburse me for the return shipping charge once they received it. I have never sent anything back before to Delivears but have with disneystore.com and WDW
Merchandise and they always issue a call tag for the package. So anyway is this normal for delivears not to do a call tag?

I've never had that happen, but policy is changing constantly these days as they look to save every penny. However, how are they supposed to know how much
your postage was if you send it UPS? There's no price marked on the package. You have to leave the package open while it's weighed at the UPS store,
finish your note by adding the postage amount, and then insert it into the box and seal it. Sounds like a recipe for inconvenience.

I have returned some damaged merchandise with Disney with UPS that way and I had been reimbursed with no problem.

In the past, Ive returned a broken big fig from disneystore.com and they have actually just had UPS come pick it up at my house, altho they also sent me a
replacement, so this is different

I'm going to keep mine. They are sending a will call tag to return the broken pieces. I told them how people are disapointed in the quality and the fact
each set isn't indviduly numbered. I plan to have a custom clear box made for it soon.
